Well, here we go again. Wind! But before you think I'm going to complain, let me say that shortly after starting the race and getting away from the water, the wind and temperature wasn't so bad. The only thing about the wind in this race was the 32 degree wind chill. Yikes! And, guess who forgot her gloves...yep! I think I'm going to pack a diddy bag with things I "might" need so I won't forget them or overthink it and just plain out not take them nearly always making the wrong decision. For instance, gloves, ear muffs, knee straps, etc.
Most everyone stood behind the wall of the stadium that guarded them from the wind. Thank goodness for that wall. For several years now, we all find ourselves either huddled up against it or staying in the ladies room as long as you can without seeming like you're taking up space someone else should have. It's so nice and warm in there. Thank goodness for that huge bathroom!
As time neared for the race to start hardly anyone was moving out to the corrals. It wasn't until about 5 minutes before it started did people begin to move. Once there, I found a couple of ladies that seem to be friends standing close by. They were taller than me so I "casually" huddled close by and let them buffer the wind from me. The day was gorgeous. I love how you can see the sun rise from the starting line.
Off we go...further away from the water. Because we had stood so long outside my hands were frozen. As a matter of fact, right after starting it dawned on me that I couldn't feel them. Oh, where are my gloves!!! At home snuggled in its usual place in a WARM room. I began moving my hands around and I still couldn't feel them and began feeling pain where they use to be. Getting a little alarmed, I began shaking them. It hurt at first but then I realized that if I didn't get circulation moving soon, it would be worse because we were headed for the 3-mile bridge soon, which means subjection to the wind again. Shake, shake, shake...oh, am I running?? I don't even know. My goal had changed...at least, for now. I just got to get my hands moving to prevent frost bite. Yes, I really thought that! After several minutes, I began go get some feeling back in them. I was at the park and could see the water in the distance. To me, that means the race is starting when you get alongside the water.
I love this race. To get to run with water all around and the challenge those hilly bridges always present to me. I just love to run over bridges. The water is just so beautiful and I never think about running because I love to see God's beauty. It's different every time.
As we head to the bridge, I realized I didn't feel the wind any more. Guess moving interior, focusing on getting warm and looking at such beauty helped that. When we began the climb, I felt the wind on my back. It actually pushed you along. It was great!! What a difference to have a tail wind as opposed to the horrible head winds in the last race. Don't think I've ever had wind that helped you along as long as that. I ran about 3 miles!! It felt so good.
All in all, I was so pleased with the race. I continued to do my run/walk plan after the wind-push. I've never placed in this race and I am very okay with that. There are SO many people in it. My time was 1:43:59 with an 11:07 pace. Of course, not my best but getting back on my feet again. I'll take it! One step at a time...I didn't give up nor quit. That spells success!
Coming up in two weeks is the Sea Turtle Half Marathon in Gulf Shores. This is the second half in my 3-part series of the Run The Beach Series. It's good to be alive and well. Now, go

Big Beach Half Marathon
What a beautiful day to race! The air was nice and crisp with blue skies and lots of sun. I have to admit I was quite nervous. It had been a few months since I had raced. I was excited, nervous, had a good plan to use and almost sick to my stomach...all before I left home. I signed up for the Run The Beach Series. This is my first series [I've been wanting to do one for years]. There are three races, all half marathons. This one is the first of the year. I signed up to do them for more than one reason. Yes, I had been interested in doing a series for quite a while now but there was more. I "needed" this to help get me on the track of racing again, to keep me moving throughout the week more than just doing "something", to promote healing of last year's physical issues and one more very important thing, to increase my confidence. There are more smaller reasons but these are the most important.
My training consisted of a run/walk plan. It seems at this time that I am controlling the hip/knee pains I'd experienced all year last year. In this plan I came up with what worked for me: .10 mile walk followed by 1 mile easy running. This had been done a couple of times before the race [.50 mile run had been done several times but upped it to a mile the week before the race and it felt comfortable]. This plan has encouraged me and built up my confidence. I want to run solid so bad and so far using this plan may help me get there again soon.
I saw some friends before the race. A pic was taken to reflect back on the running buddies that had come. Don't get to see them much except for races but it's always like good friends. I love my running family! Thanks, Pete, for the pic.
A brisk walk was done before the race started to warm up. I wanted to begin the race with my mile run. This worked great. The first mile was a breeze and very comfortable. I realized that this plan was working just like I'd hoped it would. The only bad thing about it is that the water stops came up during my run stint which affected my pace. I believe most of my running intervals were in the 10:00 paces. Every time I looked at my watch that's what I'd see...then there would be a stop. I always got water and walked through the stop. When I saw on the map that the stops were over 2 miles apart I felt needed to do it this way. I had a small water bottle in my Flip Belt and probably should have ignored some of the stops and used it if I needed it...but didn't. I'll rethink this in the future.
Everything was going great...until...we left the Backcountry Trail System and hit the beach for the last 3+ miles. I was taken back with the strength of the wind that hit us like a ton of bricks. But this monster kept pelting us solid; not like a breeze that comes and goes, it was solid strong winds! You keep thinking that it will let up but instead the opposite happened. The difference became the strong gusts. We all thought we were going to die! Everyone around me began walking...totally and completely. Occasionally, you'd try to run but no more than a few steps could you make without resorting to walking again. We received colored leis from the last water stop which was at the end of the trail before getting onto the highway. The leis blew back so hard that it blew straight out BEHIND you. Yes, everyone's did this! After trying to get use to the strangling feel and couldn't, that little sucker came off!! It wasn't long before my friend, Diane, came along side of me. She said she had been watching me [I was trying to run so hard!] and said that I wasn't making any progress running and to start power walking. She's super at this...I'm not but was getting worn down. Said we'd probably do better by doing that...until we got closer and we could run in to the end. Still thinking the wind would let up, I looked ahead at the tall buildings hoping that once we got by them the wind would break. Well, NO WAY!! The buildings seem to cause a tunnel for the wind to get stronger. Man...this blew any and all chances of getting a decent time. The end of the race was so hard. I did run through the Finish Line. That was good..........actually good that the race was over after the last 3+ miles of being beaten to death. By the way, got word that there was 15-20 mph winds and that's not counting the gusts! Whew!!
Now that I got the bad out of the way, there were many good things that came about.
1. I felt great. There was no pain until I tried to run against the wind for so long that it seem to be too much resistance. BUT...overall, no pain!
2. My run/walk plan worked. Real pleased that I came up with this ratio. It works for me.
3. My Flip Belt worked well carrying an 8 oz. water bottle. Wasn't sure about this.
4. The temp and sun was great. It was easy to breathe and I'm grateful for that.
5. My hubby was there to support me. Folks, it's a long time waiting for someone to complete long races. If you have someone who does this for you, you are blessed.
6. I did not want to "race". My main objective was to finish uninjured.
7. The bad part of #6 is that I'm a runner at heart...meaning I had hoped I'd finish under 3 hours with this run/walk plan. I finished well below the 3 hours...yay!!
8. My run intervals were much better than I would have predicted.
9. After a successful race, I'm looking forward to solid running again soon.
10. I'm feeling stronger...still cautious...but beginning to love running again. Yay!
Notables that raced were Jeff Galloway and Brett Favre. Cool! I love my running family. Don't think I've ever met a runner that discourages you. They all pat you on the back for a good race effort and encourage you to keep at it...and...look forward to seeing you at the next race. It's a cool family to belong to! Here are a few pics Kent took.
One final picture and it's of the medal. It doesn't do it justice because it's just beautiful.
Well, there you have it. The first half marathon of the series. Got a lot of racing coming up...long ones, that is. Hope you're doing well in your winter racing. Until next time,

Review & Preview
As you can tell from my posts for 2016, not many were made. Seems I stayed in an injured mode most of the year. Like all of you, I want to make all of these resolutions (and I still do) but I must say that I learned last year that's not always the best thing to do. Maybe it's because I'm getting older...or not. Seriously, one thing I did try to do was to make myself accountable to others by telling them what I was or wasn't going to do. Everywhere you look, we are advised that to make accountability work is to "announce" it to others. Unfortunately, that just didn't work for me. And, because I wasn't able to meet those expectations I stayed in a very low mood most of the year. I found I would beat myself up for this or that, give up, give in, stop a class, withdraw from meeting with friends to run, sit around a lot, stop going to the gym, etc. and overall most of the year just felt discouraged with myself. Soooo, this year I'm going to back away from that. My best is MY best...no one else's!
Yes, I do plan to be accountable but not in that way. One thing I found that worked for me was doing monthly challenges. Seems I can stick to a challenge for 30 days better than one that steps on whatever little achievement I may have made. A time or two, I wasn't able to finish one. BUT...on the other hand, I pulled out more than I ever thought I could/would because of injuries, sickness, etc. were all around me. For example, I finished the year with over 1,000 miles on my feet. There were several times that I wasn't able to do anything but walk; and walk I did, even though I thought the goal wasn't going to get done.
I have made friends with "walking" and I NEVER thought that was acceptable as a runner. I looked back over a few friends that are runners but had to incorporate walking in order to maintain miles on their legs during illness or injury, even if it lasted a couple of years! It was then I realized that there's nothing wrong with that. Secondly, I found that walking helped me get out more where if I had had to run it would not have happened. My husband has had to make major changes with his sport and because he never gives up, it pushes me out the door. And, finally, I found it's "okay" to walk...even in a race. Oh, no!! Thought I'd never say that...
Eating has become a problem last year. Off and on, there would be times I would have coughing periods, pulled muscles or injury that kept me from being able to even get out and walk. So, what's a girl to do?? Eat and sit!! I'm paying for this now!
At this time, I want to mention a few people that have encouraged me so much without really knowing it. In other words, I see "them" and what they are going through and their attitude toward their activities. Moe: who never gives up or stops running...who gives it all in the face of a lot of adversity...she never quits! Frances: who never quits...it doesn't matter her how fast or slow she is...it doesn't matter that she has grieved so much after losing her mother...she never quits! Marsha: who after many months of training was unable to complete the race she looked forward to...from what I saw, she was not discouraged but said "there will be more"...she never quits! Susan and Buck: who never gave up on me...always, always including me in their runs if I was able or felt like going. There are others but these have meant a lot to me last year.
I know this is weird, especially after having a hard year, but I still "feel" there are many half marathons left in me. I think of it all the time. I never see myself as "down" from running except at the exact time I'm doing it. There's always a race or distance I'm wanting to get out and do. It's like I am what I was...or maybe what I really am. So, folks, I'm not finished yet! Down, but not out!!
Okay, with all of this last year's garbage said, I want to focus on the future. I have always wanted to do a race series. One came up recently called Run The Beach Series. It is comprised of three half marathons. I went ahead and signed up before the price went up but the first one is in January and is going to push me to get it done. Training became immediate. The race will be comprised of running/walking. The only other time this was "planned" was in 2013 when I broke my shoulder and wasn't able to run for a while. I've had to start over so many times last year and this year I'm going to push through even if it is a run/walk. The second half is in February and I'm hoping I will be up to running it all...but...if I'm not there yet, so be it. It will come!! The final one will be at the end of the year and there's so much time to assure I'll be running solid by then.
Secondly, I'm going to focus more on losing weight. Yep...it has gotten way out of control. There's absolutely no reason I can't do some kind of workout at least every other day. I can do this...I WILL do this!! Losing twenty five pounds should be achieved easily. I'm going to work on this.
Thirdly, I've entered the 1,000 Mile Challenge again this year. Since I did well in it last year and was down so much, I figure I ought to bust this thing open this year. Along with this, other challenges will be entered and accomplished.
This year is going to be a better year. I can just feel it. I hope I can be an encourager to others as some have been to me. Remember to surround yourself with those that build you up and has confidence in overcoming disappointments. They will happen, so move through it. Never quit! That was my motto last year and will be again this year. Beginning NOW, I will be the best I can be with what I have NOW...not what I was or what I will be. Take care of yourself and reach for the stars. They are there whether you see them or not.
Being the best I can be...with my shoes ON! Happy 2017!!

Oily Challenge - Completed
A week after the Shrimp Festival 5k, pain came back to worry me again!! It began on October 23rd when I stepped out of the car. It was behind my left knee and would come and go like a cramp but it wasn't. It would even wake me up in the middle of night. Weird! What else??? I was getting back on my feet and now every time I took a step I experienced excruciating pain! Icing and Ibuprofen became my friends again...NOT! This went on for a MONTH!!
During this time I attended a Scrapbooking Crop and they had a lady come to speak on Essential Oils and its healing power. I went to the class and with skepticism I listened. Afterward, I talked with Cathy about the issues that concerned my husband and I. She could address those. My allergies have been giving me lots of trouble the last year and half and I was about to seek out an allergist here and begin shots again. Yes, it got that bad! I thought about our conversation regarding that and joint issues we were both experiencing [specifically gout]. The next day after lots more questions, I decided to sign up to get the starter kit. It had the oils in it that I would use for both of those issues. After all, I'd spend more just trying to find an allergist. This was my last resort. The allergies are better [to date] but still have attacks. Now, as I said they had gotten bad over the year so I wasn't looking for an overnight cure. I told her after using them in my diffuser that I was feeling better and told her I was going to try to walk/run when I finished talking with her. She mentioned to use one of the oils mixed with coconut oil and rub it on my knee. Okay, time to sit down, folks! Again, with skepticism, I did it. Mind you now that I have not been totally without pain for a while. Off I go to see what I could "do". The FIRST time I was able to begin intervals again, not just all walking. Okay...did this really happen?? Not sure. I'll try this again. A week later I ran an entire 3 miles with NO issues and no stopping!! Okay, after several uses, I am now SOLD on Panaway!! Cathy told me that this blend had healing properties, too, so I am more sold on it. I was concerned that it was more of a pain reliever and I didn't want something that would mask a problem needing to be corrected.
Thanksgiving came and went with a walk on Friday. I have been working on my 1,000 Mile Challenge for 2016 and, needless to say, so much has caused interruptions the entire year...MANY!! So much more walking than I could have ever expected. Well, let's just say I use to never walk! After Friday's walk, I realized I was 1.5 miles away from reaching the 1,000 miles. I was so excited! My next thought was that I wanted to finish my challenge with my friends who have encouraged me throughout the year! I contacted them and made a date for Monday morning. When I reached the 1.5 miles for completion, we stopped and took pics right then and there!! Of course, we didn't stop there; we went almost 4 miles past then but that was a momentous moment.
They all showed up...I have some great running friends! And, finally, my medal...I'm so happy with it as I worked really hard to achieve this distance. And, now....I have over a month to go! Woo-hoo!
Yes, this was really a great day! The future is looking great cause I plan to NEVER quit. I want to leave you with this. No matter how many times you get setback, respect the healing time with your eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel! Push through even if you have to start all over, like me. Be strong cause you CAN do it!
Run 4 It...cause you can!

Me and Moe in the front with Buck, Susan and Jean behind.
Me and Moe. Dang shirt caught on my flip-belt!
All us girls!
They all showed up...I have some great running friends! And, finally, my medal...I'm so happy with it as I worked really hard to achieve this distance. And, now....I have over a month to go! Woo-hoo!
I had planned to wear this shirt on my finishing day but it was SO hot, it didn't happen!
Fortunately, I got two shirts and this was short-sleeved. Love the last line!!

Shrimp Festival 5k
After a few months of constant hip pain, I decided that the Fiesta Five Flags 5k would be the last before I took off running to let it heal. This was my last resort before going to a chiropractor or doctor. I took a month of personal training after the race and when I finished that, I stepped back. So, the walking began a little here and there. I've never been a "walker" since I started running but knew I didn't need to let my hip just sit with no exercise. I read online that foam rolling would help and began that. After laying off running for a while [it seemed like FOREVER], it paid off. I slowly began adding a little running here and there. Little I mean .10-.25 mile. Yes, very little! The pain seemed to have gone away. But, now, I'm dealing with starting over running from scratch!! So hard for someone who had been running miles every time she walked out the door. A lot of mental agony pursued me but I hung in there refusing to think that walking was "not acceptable". Being consistent, walking became my friend.
I was hoping that all of the laid-off stuff would pay off for good racing in the fall. It seem to be working and I was SO hungry to start running again. Well, not like in the past but being consistent and doing "my" best for the time. Time was pressing me to decide on the Shrimp Festival race. The pressure came in determining if I should do the 10k [which is what I wanted to do] or be safe and do the 5k. Last minute decision came to doing the 5k...and I'm glad that I did. It was the best decision considering the recent issues I'd been dealing with. I felt good but fat and slow, ha! It is what it is...right? I have picked up weight not being able to do much for a few months! Of course, I hadn't been watching my diet either...being depressed surely didn't give me much encouragement to do my best.
The race felt good and I wanted to run harder so bad but it just isn't in me yet. When I finished the race, I checked the results. This is a big race and, honestly, I didn't have a CLUE that I could have placed...just wanted to know what my time was and how I ranked in my age group. As it turned out, it wasn't too bad. I looked and looked at it surely thinking there was an error in that "someone" hadn't been put in the system yet that would have smoked me! After all, I definitely would have smoked this time just a short time ago. My time got me in First Place! Shocked, to say the least. Guess the 60-64 age group has been good to me. Here's my award. I am so proud of it!
It was a nice day to race and be with friends. Glad to be back in the swing of things.

It was 100% humidity making it a little hard to breathe. My pace was 10:05 and I'll take that! Below is a picture of my Sole Sisters that placed in their age groups, too. There were more Sole Sisters but didn't get those pics. These are the ones that placed. Also, one of my friends, Buck, who did well in his age group. It was a nice day to race and be with friends. Glad to be back in the swing of things.

Good Life Ride
What a beautiful day for a ride. Yep, I said "ride". This is my first Good Life Ride today. Bad part first...I signed up for the 22 miler but dropped to the 10 miler. I was afraid I could not maintain the 10 mph requirement for the 22 mile distance. I rode my bike on Monday for 15 miles and it was tough! Don't know if it was where I rode or the grades or just the plain fact that I didn't use my gears as I should. I am so new at biking and have SO much to learn! I knew I could ride the 10 miles and probably could have done close to 20 with no problem but the speed made it a question. After all, I can't stand when people bypass the rules just because they want to do something. It is so selfish and annoying to others. Hence...10 miles for me today.
I wanted to do the very best that I could even if it was a fun ride. It's just the competitor in me, I guess. I started out in the front so I wouldn't have to get around those that planned on a leisurely ride or those with children. For a short while, there were four people ahead of me. It wasn't too long though before two couples passed me. As we got through the roads and headed out on to the trail system the trees kept it nice and cool even though the temps were not bad to begin with. The trail was so nice to ride on. The eight folks that got ahead of me were barely seen after a couple of miles on this turn. I enjoyed this so much! It was so peaceful. Before I realized it I was nearing the turn around point and they were all there . I know this was a ride and not a race but when I reached this point, I didn't expect to just sit around and laugh at the teenagers that couldn't get the water container open for me! A little irritating as it should have already been done. After a quick swig, I got back on the trail and headed back to the finish.
The feeling was so different from a race as there weren't any Start or Finish Lines. You started together and finished on your own. Something I've got to get accustomed to if I want to do more. One thing I wasn't excited about was the many, many times you had to slow to almost a stop or stop completely for the road intersections on the trail. I would guess that there were at least a dozen of those ONE WAY! This slows you down a lot and really cuts into your speed. Okay...it's coming out...the racer that I am.
There were 4 rides today. They were 10 miles, 22 miles, 40 miles and 64 miles with varying start times and locations. The further you rode the earlier you started. All ended at Tacky Jack's in Gulf Shores. TJ served nachos and drinks and they were so good. I can't wait to do this one next year...and, as of now, it will definitely be the 22 miler. I found a couple of friends afterward and talked with them some. Marsha and Pete were so encouraging even if they had just finished their 40 miles. It's friends like these, whether they be bikers or runners, that reaches down inside you and gives you that extra "atta boy" that everyone wants and needs. Thanks, guys!! I appreciate you!
Here are my stats when it was all said and done. 10.47 miles at a 10.6 mph for 59:03 minutes. I am well pleased since I know this could have been faster. I really, really enjoyed this and YES, there will be more. I learned more about my gears and how to utilize them...again, this is a learning curve for sure, but my hope is getting stronger. Unfortunately, there are no pics today. :( But I learned that I could get into this new sport easier than I thought I could. Yay!
I hope you are outside doing something because it's got to be beautiful where you are today. I want to encourage you to at least, get out and walk a little. Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all of my lady-friends.

Fiesta Five Flags 5k...Plus
April ended with completing 100 running/walking miles this month. As a matter of fact, I have achieved 449.95 miles year-to-date on my way to reaching 1,000 miles for the year. I'm thankful I am ahead of the game cause you never know what the future holds as far as being able to get them all in. Also, I've been doing a 100-Mile Challenge each month since January and have more than accomplished this.
We have run the Fiesta of Five Flags for years and it just seemed "right" to go to it this year. Unfortunately, we neither one are up-to-par this year. So we refocused our minds and did the best we could do. As most of you know, my right hip has really been a pain...literally. My plan this race was to run/walk it. I had thought of withdrawing completely but hated to do that since I really could walk it if I needed to. I didn't have a "plan" per se' but tried to run as much as I could and when I felt a twinge in my hip I walked a little bit. This was what I did throughout the race. I'm so glad that I went through with this. Feeling like a quitter is quite different than feeling like you did the best you could do THROUGH the problem. As it turned out, I placed 4th place in my age group of 14 others and only 5 seconds from actually getting an award! Two ladies in my group received two of the top awards pushing me higher in rank.
The month of May will present itself doing different things on a regular basis from the past. For one, I'm going to stop running for two weeks and see if this helps my hip. If I see progress but not completely pain free, then I will lay off another two weeks. Hopefully, this will take care of my problem. I'm thinking I'm having sciatic nerve problems.
Secondly, I'm going to focus on riding my bike more to give my running legs a break for a while. Today, I rode 15 miles on the trail system. I honestly wish I could say I love cycling. For now, I'm plugging along working on getting my butt use to the seat and not go numb before the ride is up. I am still learning how to use my gears and there are so many things I need to know about a bike itself including maintenance and repair.
I saw a national bike challenge on Facebook and looked into it. So in order to keep me on my bike regularly, I joined it. For anyone that might be interested in doing this, too, here is the site
https://nationalbikechallenge.org/home . Being realistic, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to keep with riding every day in May but I plan to ride at least one mile as much as I possibly can through the month and adding as many miles as I can through the end of September. This includes spinning. I hope by the end of the month, I can actually say that I look forward to riding 10 or 15 miles whenever I choose and that my butt will not hurt any more.
I'll be looking into swimming soon to give me another cross training workout while my hip heals. I'm also going to try a Gentle Yoga class.
Well, that's it for now. I'm looking forward to better running/racing this fall/winter. Summer is not my time to run outside anyway so this is a great time to "lay off". Hope all is going well for you. Until next time

Friends, friends, friends
Today was the Zydeco 5k in Gulf Shores. I had not planned to do this race but had several friends that were signed up. A couple of days before, I received information that my friend, Ginny, might be coming down and was going to do the race. I was excited. So, I saw it as a no-brainer that I had to go watch it. After all, it has been a few years since I'd seen and visited with Ginny. I had a baby shower to attend mid-morning and knew I couldn't get cleaned up fast enough after the race so I dressed for the shower since it was going to be right around the block from the race. This way I could stay as long as I could and visit with everyone. Here are a few pre-race pics.
Award info...Ginny got 1st place in her age group; Moe got 2nd and Susan got 3rd in their age group; and Josh got 2nd in his age group. I was sad that Buck didn't place because he finished strong and fast! He ran great today; he was 5th in his age group. There were 442 runners...much larger than last year's inaugural race. Also, runners were chipped which I think was a good idea. It was VERY windy today and some of my friends mentioned how that played a role in their effort. All in all, everyone did great and I am very proud of them. I love my friends!!
Before the awards began, I left for the baby shower. This was for Pastor Lloyd and Leeanne Stilley's DIL. It is their first grandchild and it's a girl...the first little girl in their line in a long while. The ladies had the room decorated so beautiful and "girly". I loved it! Here are a few pics.
It was definitely a very full morning of visiting, cheering, picture taking and showering! Oh, did I tell you...I love my friends!!

Mileage is the Name of the Game
I entered a 100-Mile Challenge in January and shortly thereafter saw another challenge of 1,000 miles for the year. So, I hopped on those trains and left the station. The first quarter is "down" and I am feeling pleased with my progress. Yes, I said QUARTER! Here are the numbers:
January - 112.43
February - 114.62
March - 122.58
For a year-to-date total, this adds up to be 349.63 miles for three months. I am very realistic and at times feel pessimistic; in saying this, that I do know things will come up and change your well-planned schedule. It could be weather [and yes, if it's bad enough I don't even want to get out and go to the gym], illness, injury, company, special events and sometimes you just don't "feel like" doing anything and need some extra rest. Don't give up! Do what you can and it will all pan out for the good.
Yes, I've felt good this quarter and, yes, I've been injured and struggled to get back "up" again. But I haven't quit! Regardless of how hard things can get, how discouraged I get with my progress or ability or how much I want to quit, I now have a base to work on and history to prove that I can do this! No, Sireee, Bob...I will NOT quit!!
This week I began a month of personal training for the first time ever. I'm doing it with two other ladies [to keep the cost down]. These ladies have been doing this for about 3 years. I feel like such a sissy as I have so much to work on and learn and get up to "speed". Some weight exercises, core and balance exercises and all-around ab workouts have been good. I'm learning machines I've not known how to use as well as new exercises using free weights, balls, kettleballs and other equipment. Regardless of how awful I am at this time, pushing on is the game in this arena. Thanks, Pam, for good routines! And, your patience with me! I will be stronger at the end of the month and looking forward to new and exciting things at the Y.
I'll share this but am not ready to be accountable to it yet. I do a spin class once a week...I know, I know...many of you, and probably most, do several classes a week but I love to run and that's where all my effort basically goes. Anyway, the first part of the year when I started spin, I had a real hard time. My endurance was awful!! And, standing up was almost impossible and I wanted to quit big-time due to discouragement. I hung in there and after talking with Pam she asked if I ran before class and I said yes; she suggested running 1-2 miles or none and see if I could do the class better. So I dropped my mileage and after a few more classes I was able to stand and do the class as instructed. Soon I started my running before class again but very easy. Doing a couple of miles didn't seem to bother me. Well...to make a long story short...NOT...I stayed with it. Now, I run 2 miles before class and 2 afterward, working on endurance and mileage in spin class. This week, I ran my usual 2 miles before class at a decent pace, did class [achieving 21.6 miles], and ran another 2 miles afterward at a very good pace. I felt really good throughout and strong. Back to the first sentence of this paragraph. If things keep going well and I get a little confidence, I'd like to do my first duathlon this year. I think I can do this and that it is an achievable goal. We'll see..........
So for now, I'm "banking" as many miles as I can, to meet my monthly and yearly goal. Actually, I had no idea that I could do 100 miles a month and it's been three months down. This builds my confidence and assurance that it can be done. I am eager to get out and add more miles.
Whatever you are doing, do it with all you have. Do NOT compare yourself with others or it will be easy to get discouraged, quit or put yourself down. There is only one YOU...be the best YOU can be.

Azalea Trail 10k & More
Let me start out with the "More" in my title. As I entered a new decade age, I thought it might be good to start out with making new PR's each decade. After all, most previous ones probably won't be broken as you are younger and faster and not broke down. There is one I hope to break but we will leave that up to the future to see if it will be done. Making out my new list, I discovered that not only have I been racing a lot but that every one I've done since turning 60 have been different distances. No repeats. I thought how odd that was. I couldn't have planned it any better. The races done are: 5k, 4 miles, 8k [trail race which will be documented different than an 8k road race], 10k, 15k and a half marathon. I've won medals in every race except for the 15k which is a large race. The first one was actually the same week I turned 60. The others, ironically, have been a week apart with the exception of one being two weeks. All of this makes me a happy running girl. Looking back, I would have had no idea I would have done all of this in a short amount of time.
Azalea Trail Report
Initially, I had hoped to be injury free to run the 10k this year. My distance is improving and my strength is better than it has been in quite a while. Unfortunately, the 8k run in the sand took its toll on my right groin and hip. I was bummed out about that; but in the last week I've babied that thing as much as I could keeping some distance on my legs even if it meant walking some. By the time of this race, it was getting much better. The Azalea Trail race is one of my all-time favorites and I was sad that I wasn't able to run it like I had hoped to. On the positive side...I will return next year in better condition. At least, I hope so.
Friends from our hometown were coming to this race and I was excited to see them, especially my friend, Frank. I haven't seen him since we moved a year ago!! He and I are long time running partners and I've really missed running with him.
And, I want to say that 3 of us trained for our first marathon together and though we got our picture taken per chance, it really brought back some really good memories of that time. Here's D, me and Frank.
On to the race. Here are some action shots of me and only some of my friends. Unfortunately, not everyone's pics were taken...like my hubby's! :(
Then you always have those friends that just "can't help themselves" but let it all hang out, ha! Life would be boring without them, for sure. Love these guys...
Kent did well in his 5k race. He received 3rd Overall Racewalker. I'm so proud of him!
My time was way off as far as competing goes so I wasn't looking for a single bit of recognition. BUT...as it turned out, I placed 6th in my age group. They go 10 deep in the 10k. I was 6th out of 34 others. Woo-hoo!! I am such a happy girl. On top of that, I had no pain throughout the race. There was some soreness and achiness but NO pain. And, a big shout out to Kathy for placing in her age group, too!! You go, girl!
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that there was 80% chance of rain! I was so dreading this. For some reason, the rain went away and not a drop fell; the sun even came out a little. It was perfect!
Kent and I would like to encourage you to do what you can with what you have but never give up or give in.
